Westcoat SC-70 Acrylic Lacquer Sealer | 5 Gallon

About

Westcoat's SC-70 Acrylic Lacquer Sealer is a clear, single component, VOC compliant solvenated lacquer sealer and glaze. It is a very hard acrylic polymer that is UV and stain resistant and is designed to protect and beautify concrete substrates. The solvent base can help the material to penetrate and adhere to concrete. SC-70 will darken the substrate and produce a gloss or “wet look”.

Specs

  • Smooth Surface Coverage: Up to 2,000 sq ft per 5 gallons
  • Rough Surface Coverage: 1,000 – 1,500 sq ft per 5 gallons
  • VOC Content: <100 gm/L

Instructions

Preparation

For concrete, the surface should be at least 2500 psi and have cured for a minimum of 28 days. Prepare concrete to a profile equal to CSP 2-3. You may mechanically profile by grinding or shot blasting. The concrete should be porous and be able to absorb water. Prior to starting work, test existing concrete slab for efflorescence, moisture and hydrostatic pressure. Vacuum surface entirely and ensure that any dust or contaminates are removed, as these will deter adhesion.

As a sealer for ALX, MACoat or Texture-Crete, apply directly over the textured surface. If texture has been left for more than 72 hours or it has become dirty, clean as needed prior to application of SC-70. Allow to fully dry. Note: The most common reason for coating failure is due to lack of preparation.

Mixing

Stir prior to use.

Thinning

May be thinned up to 25% with CA-23 ThinCoat - Medium Solvent for better absorption, increased coverage, longer working time in hot and arid climates and better ease when spraying. Reducing with solvent and applying in thin coats will help avoid bubbles and streaks in direct sun. Acetone can be used in lieu of CA-23, but will not provide the same benefits as CA-23.

Coverage

Will vary depending on the surface. Up to 400 square feet per gallon on a smooth surface and between 200-300 square feet per gallon on a rough surface. Test area to determine coverage and whether or not a second coat is desired.

Applying Product

Before beginning any project, it is recommended that a mock-up be installed to help indicate the overall look and finish and to determine compatibility to the substrate. Can be sprayed, brushed, or rolled. If rolled, neatly cut-in all edges with a brush and roll the center using a 1/2 inch to 3/4 nap, good quality roller cover. Be sure to spread evenly in a "V" pattern, rolling in both directions. Roll product as thin as possible. If spraying, use Hudson type sprayer after thinning.

Dry Time

SC-70 dries very fast and can be re-coated in as soon as 30 to 60 minutes at 70°F. Allow 4 hours before light foot traffic. Normal traffic may be permitted after 24 hours. Allow 48 hours before placing heavy objects on the surface. Allow 72 hours before vehicular traffic.

Clean Up

Uncured material can be removed with an environmentally safe solvent. Cured material can only be removed mechanically. Equipment should be cleaned immediately after use with an environmentally safe solvent.

Limitations

  • This product is designed for professional use only.
  • Do not apply at temperatures below 50°F or above 90°F. Hot or cold weather may affect dry times.
  • Be sure to do adequate surface preparation.
  • Do not apply more than 2 thin coats. Maximum 2-3 dry mils per coat.
  • Rain may cause SC-70 to whiten. If inclement weather threatens, cover deck to protect new application.
  • Surface will become more slippery with sealers. Skid resistant additive are available.
  • Do not apply over SC-10 Acrylic Topcoat or other water-based acrylics.
  • Surface can be resealed as needed, approximately every 3-5 years, but avoid excess sealer buildup by recoating too soon or too heavy.
  • Do not allow any Westcoat products to freeze.

Slip Precaution

Westcoat Specialty Coatings Systems highly recommends the use of a slip-resistant additive to all coatings/systems that may be exposed to wet, oily, greasy, or slippery conditions. It is the end user's responsibility to provide a flooring system that meets current safety standards. Westcoat and its distributors will not be responsible for injury incurred during a slip and fall incident. For the current coefficient of friction requirements, please consult your local building codes.
